Custom Art Piece: “I Am a Man” by David Ikard
Bid for a one-of a kind art piece from renowned artist and professor of African American and Diaspora Studies, Dr. David Ikard! A social justice advocate, Ikard’s paintings often reflect his love for what Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes would call the “lowdown” folks who are often the most vilified and scapegoated and the least protected and understood group in our society.
Artist’s Statement:
This painting was inspired by the 1968 black sanitation worker strike in Memphis, Tennessee. The strike wasn’t just about fair wages and securing comparable benefits to their white peers, it was about humanity and self-determination. The American experiment with democracy has always been rocky and in flux. It has also been tainted by privilege and bias. However, the impulse to prioritize self-determination over allegiance to a crown or aristocracy has paved the way for a more inclusive republic. This painting serves as a reminder that our destinies are inextricably linked.
