Disgraced doctor’s testimony put Tennessee man in prison for 24 years

After 27+ years in prison, Wayne has been granted a new trial based on new scientific evidence of actual innocence! In November 2022, the Tennessean first highlighted Wayne’s case, which relied on the testimony of former medical examiner, Dr. Charles Harlan.

“Wayne Burgess has always asserted his innocence since the very first day he was arrested,” said Tennessee Innocence Project Deputy Director Jason Gichner, Burgess’ attorney. “We are grateful for Judge Allen’s decision, and we will continue to push forward and fight for (Burgess) because he is innocent.” To read the full Tennessean story, click here.
